Water: We operate on borehole water which comes from 110M below the ground. This water is used for everything in the lodge, cooking, gardens and rooms. It is safe to drink and use for washing etc. We do not use municipal water as the demand in the area is too high. This means we are not taking from the river and we are eliminating all chances of disease from the municipal water Sewage: We have just installed and built a 20 000L bio chemical septic tank which filters and purifies the water making it reusable for irrigation. This saves the use of the borehole water and is a very good form of recycling. The water bowsers are fitter with ball valves and mercury switches which turns the main bore hole pump off when the bowsers are full which eliminates water wastage Power: We have a policy that if any room or area of the lodge is not being used all power to that section of the lodge is turned off. All rooms that are occupied are monitored for electrical usage, so when the guest is out of the room the power to the room is turned off. We only allow 2 hours a day of geyser usage a day per room. This heats the water sufficiently for the clients and also saves power. Litter: We have an out-sourced refuse removal company that removes all refuse on a daily basis; this refuse is taken to the new eco friendly dump that has been built Kasane. Health department: We successfully past our last health inspection with flying colours due to our conservation policies at the lodge |
Sango Safari Camp |
We have sourced and produced all our furniture locally to reduce carbon footprint
We are busy installing a low water consumption sewage system to reduce environmental impact The lamps that we use are fuelled with bio fuel (a non crude oil derivative)
We have tried to reduce our carbon footprint by offering walking and mekoro activities as an alternate to game drives.
Our Mekoro are man made out of fibreglass instead of using a traditional style of mekoro made out of wood. We also have fat traps to remove all oil from kitchen water
Our vehicles are fuelled up on a special bunded platform to avoid oil spillage into the soil We source as much of our food as possible locally
We try and manage our resupplies to minimise and transport and dead legs to save on fuel and carbon footprint Sango has chosen not to operate generators to get a supply of energy to the camp - this is done via solar panels which charge batteries, which we in turn invert for electricity to charge batteries, camera's etc. for guests.
Sango guests' rooms use solar lighting to light up their rooms.
Sango walk way lights are also solar lights.
Sango Camp has been built in a "low impact" manner, with out tents built on decks rather than building directly on the ground. If we had to de-construct the camp, this could be done in a very short amount of time and within months you would see no evidence that the camp was even there.
The wood used for the Sango decks is exotic wood that has been cleared away from waterways. This frees us the space for indigenous species to take over from the exotics as well as allowing more appropriate trees to grow where they have evolved to grow (i.e., in drier areas, it is better to have local trees which do not consume as much water as some exotic species would.)
Sango showers are designed in a rustic bucket shower style. This helps to control water wastage in a fun yet authentic and eco friendly way.
On a more pro Botswana note. Sango Safari Camp is in partnership with a Botswana Citizen who holds the majority of shares for this company and we employ only people from within the Khwai community and Botswana citizens. This promotes sustainable development within Botswana. |
Khwai Tented Camp |
Khwai Tented Camp uses solar lighting and wind up bed side lamps and torches. For radios and communication solar powered equipment.
Gas stoves, fridges and hot water on demand are all using clean source of fuel (Gas). Soaps are all natural products.
Tents and canvas are used for most of the structures so that it is low impact and can pack away easily. |
Day 1: Flight: Johannesburg – Victoria Falls (not included)
Today you will be collected from Victoria Falls Airport and assisted onto your transfer to Elephant Valley Lodge. This transfer takes approximately 2 hours and involves Zimbabwe and Botswana customs and immigration en-route. On arrival you will be welcomed by the management who will show you to your room, given a brief overview of the lodge and area and will then discuss which activities you would like to do during your stay. Enjoy a lovely lunch and afternoon relaxing before your pm activity. You then return to the lodge in time to freshen up before a delicious dinner accompanies by the sounds of the African bush. The Chobe region is home to the largest population of wild elephant in the world. This is estimated to be approximately 120,000 individuals. Their sometimes daily passage takes them from Zimbabwe through the Chobe and on into Namibia before returning. Elephant Valley Lodge lies along one of these routes and is situated in the Kasane Forest, which is adjacent to the Chobe National Park. Open guest areas, a secluded hide, refreshing swimming pool and 20 'Meru styled' tents complete the lodge which lies beneath a forest of sturdy knob thorns. It is within these tree tops that the largest colony of white back vultures occurs. The lodge is unique for several reasons and amongst these is the fact that it is situated within a game rich reserve affording the guests wonderful sightings between our open landrover safaris into the Chobe and boat cruises along the Chobe River. The camp perimeter is fenced to keep the elephant from moving through the camp, instead now they move around the camp boundary, along their well worn paths to and from the Chobe River. Your tent also ensures that you are able to hear the multitude of night sounds as you drift away with vivid thoughts of the experiences of your day on safari. Each of the tents features twin beds, en suite shower and toilet, mini safe and fan.
At Elephant Valley we have found that a morning cruise along the Chobe River provides a couple of distinct advantages they include the following:
During the morning the river is distinctly less busy with fewer boats. This also permits a longer experience, assuming that sightings kept us busy, and we do not have to cut the trip short to get back before sunset. It does also permit a greater length of the river to be explored. In the afternoons, we have found that the Chobe National Park is conversely less busy and we are able to enjoy a sun downer along the river to capture the sunset on camera. It is also during the late afternoon that game becomes most active.
Day 3: After breakfast and an early morning activity (time permitting) you will be transferred by road to Kasane Airport where you will be met by your pilot and transferred by light aircraft to Sango Safari Camp.
